Rescue knows no distance. It starts with a message, a photo, or a plea for help that travels across continents. For Luigi, his story began in the ancient city of Baalbek, but the call for help came all the way from a fellow rescuer who had moved to the United States.
She reached out to me about a cat with a devastating eye infection. In a village where resources were scarce and no one was able to step in, Luigi was fading. When I saw his photo, the reality was immediate and chilling: this cat would not make it if I didn’t intervene.

A long road to healing
The logistics of rescue in Lebanon are often a puzzle of kindness and grit. A taxi driver, acting as a lifeline, brought Luigi from the heights of Baalbek down to the clinic we trust in Sarba.
Upon arrival, we were faced with a choice. While the infection was severe, we wanted to give his eye every possible chance. We started an intensive treatment regimen, hoping against hope that we could save his sight.
The shadow of unethical “care”
While Luigi was undergoing treatment, he needed a safe place to stay. Based on a recommendation from a “so-called rescuer,” he was placed in a boarding facility. It was a decision I would soon regret.
It turned out to be the same unethical, horrible boarding place where our sweet Fanny was once kept. In the world of advocacy, we often encounter people who prioritize profit or ego over the actual welfare of the animals. Luigi began to deteriorate; he didn’t look right, and his spirit was dimming.
I knew I couldn’t leave him there. I brought Luigi into my own home, making him part of my foster family where I could monitor every breath and every symptom.

The strength to let go
Despite our best efforts and weeks of treatment, Luigi’s eye could not be saved. The damage was too deep, and the pain was too great. To give him a life free from suffering, he underwent surgery for eye removal (enucleation).
Watching a cat recover from such a procedure is a lesson in resilience. Luigi didn’t mourn what he lost; he celebrated the fact that the pain was finally gone. With one eye and a heart full of trust, he began the process of vaccinations and paperwork required to travel to Europe.

A new life in France
They say that for every soul we save, there is a “perfect” person waiting on the other side. For Luigi, that person was in France.
After months of recovery, foster care, and preparation, Luigi finally boarded his flight. He left behind the neglect of Baalbek and the shadows of that unethical boarding house for a life of safety, soft pillows, and unconditional love.
Luigi’s story is a stark reminder of why we do what we do. It’s a reminder that even when the “system” fails, when rescuers aren’t who they say they are or when clinics aren’t enough, the act of fostering and fighting for one individual life changes the world for that animal.
Luigi is now home. Safe, loved, and finally seen.
