Rescue work is rarely a straight line. It is a series of loops, sharp turns, and unexpected roadblocks that test your resolve. The story of Tom, a beautiful cat who found himself discarded like trash, is a testament to that rollercoaster, and a reminder of why we must never stop fighting for the voiceless.
Tom’s journey began on the streets, where he was struggling to survive after being dumped. For a breed cat, the transition from a home to the harsh reality of street life is often a death sentence. As part of our ongoing TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) efforts, we knew the first and most vital step was to get him neutered immediately to protect him and prevent more suffering. You can read about that first step here.
While he was recovering at the clinic, I felt a surge of hope. A woman who had recently lost her own cat reached out, expressing a desire to adopt him. She filled out our pre-adoption questionnaire, and on paper, everything looked perfect. We scheduled their first meeting for a Monday.
To ensure Tom stayed safe and off the streets until then, I reached out to someone I believed was a rescuer. At the time, I thought she shared our mission. I asked her to foster him for just the weekend, and she agreed.
But on Monday, the “perfect” plan crumbled. The potential adopter backed out, claiming her parents weren’t ready. Tom was left in the care of the foster, a woman whose true character would eventually reveal itself to be far from the compassionate rescuer she claimed to be.
Despite the setback, Tom’s luck seemed to turn. Because he was such a striking boy, he didn’t have to wait long to find a forever home abroad. We began his vaccinations and prepared him for his new life. But just weeks before he was set to fly, disaster struck.
Tom fell ill. He began peeing blood, and we had to rush him to emergency care. He spent days in the clinic, fighting for his life. It was at this exact moment, when Tom was at his most vulnerable, that the so-called rescuer decided she “couldn’t keep him anymore.”
In the world of rescue, you see the best and worst of humanity. To abandon a sick animal in the middle of a medical crisis is a betrayal of everything we stand for. Putting a recovering cat into a boarding facility was out of the question; he needed a home, a heart, and hands-on care.
So, Tom came to me. With the help of Karim, we took over his fostering and treatment. We watched over him, administered his medicine, and slowly but surely, we saw the light come back into his eyes. He recovered fully, proving that he was a fighter through and through.
On December 26, 2025, the journey that began in the dust of a street reached its beautiful conclusion. We took Tom to the airport, where he left Beirut behind for good, headed toward his forever home in Lyon, France.
Tom’s story is a reminder that while there are people who will let you down, and situations that will break your heart, the end goal makes every struggle worth it. He is no longer a “dumped cat” or a “medical case.” He is a beloved family member, living the life he always deserved.
Thank you to everyone who supported Tom during his darkest days. Because of you, he is finally home.
